Love and disappointment

The military will put you through leadership school leading up to your promotion. Thankfully, my training was at Ft Drum so I didn’t have far to go. I still had to sleep at the training center and couldn’t go home for a month. But, it was better than being somewhere else. I remember telling my husband about graduation. The date, time and location. As it had always been, he was working nights so he’d get very little sleep, if any, before graduation. Graduation was in March 1996. I looked around the auditorium to see if I could see my husband but I couldn’t. I’m only 5 feet tall so I wasn’t surprised he was not visible. But, he is over 6 feet tall so I thought I should. My name was called and I crossed the stage, received my course completion certificate and went back to my seat. We were dismissed and everyone was meeting with their families or friends. Well, everyone but me. He slept through graduation! I was so disappointed. This was a big step for me and I really wanted him there. I understood why he wasn’t. But I was disappointed. I walked to a nearby parking lot and saw him crossing the street. It was difficult to not be angry. I hugged him and thanked him for coming to pick me up. I got my gear and went home.
